Although not an Aussie classic, Mac 'n Cheese would have to be gem many miss once going vegan, one which we have constantly been on the hunt for a plant-based alternative. Lucky for us, there are dozens of vegan, packet-mix options available at any good health-food store. Today we tried The Gluten Free Food Co.'s vegan mac n' 'cheez'.
Lets start with the
PROS:
First off, the ingredients in this mix are incredibly real. Not one nasty. Consisting of predominately coconut, nutritional yeast, miso and tapioca.
Although not incredibly pungent, there is definitely a cheesy flavour in this mix.
However, what astonished us most was the pasta itself. Now, we've tried our fair share of gluten free pasta and none of them have ever compared to the real deal, but this macaroni is indistinguishable from the classic wheat based gold. An absolute ripper!
(And not to mention, it's super easy to make - only taking 12 minutes)
Moving on to the
CONS:
Unfortunately, the biggest concern for us was the noticeable lack of salt. No matter what incredible spices you put in a dish, many go unnoticed without the help of salt. We decided to add an extra tsp of miso paste to increase the saltiness and add a little tang to the dish (great when replicating cheesy flavours).
The coconut base was also quite noticeable. Although not offensive to the overall taste, it took away from that classic mac 'n cheese flavour.
And lastly... $$$. This packet is priced at $9 for supposedly 4 servings. In all honesty, either of us could have demolished the entire packet easily, so we'd say; 1 generous serving, or two servings for a lighter meal.
Overall we rate this product a 3.5/5
It is definitely worth trying, however, we will still be pursuing our search for the best vegan mac that's worth the moolah.
